Choose the Right WebM Converter for Your Video

If a WebM file will not play where you need it, converting it to MP4 may help; if you need a WebM for a web project, convert your existing video in the other direction. First decide if you need a different video format, a still image, or audio—those are separate jobs.

Choose the output format before you convert

For a WebM file that needs to be easier to share or play in a particular setup, choose WebM → MP4. To create a WebM from an existing MP4 or another video, choose MP4 → WebM. The right choice depends on the requirements of the place or workflow where you plan to use the file; no format guarantees it will work everywhere.

WebM and MP4 are containers: they package video and audio streams, which are encoded with codecs. Changing the container or converting the streams can affect compatibility and file size, so an extension alone does not tell you everything about a video. If your source is MOV rather than WebM, see this guide to converting MOV to MP4. For a video recorded on an iPhone, this guide to changing its format after recording covers that separate starting point.

Convert a WebM file in your browser

To convert a WebM file, open Klipa’s video converter, choose the WebM file on your device, select the output format you need—such as MP4—and start the conversion. When it finishes, retrieve the converted file. The tool runs in a browser on computers and phones, so you can pick the file from the device you are using without installing software.

The input formats accepted by the tool include 3gp, aac, avi, flac, flv, m4a, mkv, mov, mp3, mp4, ogg, wav, webm and wmv. The steps are the same when converting an existing MP4 to WebM: choose the MP4, set WebM as the output, then start and retrieve the result. A Pass or subscription can provide a higher resolution when the source video supports it.

Use the test result as an example, not a promise

In our team’s production-server test on 2026-10-26, we converted a 7.5 MB MP4 demonstration video to WebM. The 21.3-second source was 1080p H.264 with AAC audio; the result was 3.3 MB with VP9 video and Opus audio, also at 1080p. That is a measured size reduction of 56.0%, and processing took 38.6 seconds.

This is one test on one file, not a forecast for your video. A different duration, source encoding, image content or output setting can change both the resulting size and processing time. In particular, WebM is not automatically smaller than MP4 in every conversion; compare the output with your own playback and sharing needs.

JPG and MP3 require extraction, not video conversion

To convert a WebM file to JPG, you usually want to extract a still frame—a single image from a chosen point in the video. A video converter changing one video format into another does not perform that task. Use a video or image tool that lets you select and export a frame, then choose JPG as the image format.

To convert WebM to MP3, extract the audio track instead. An audio extractor or converter can save the sound as MP3; this creates an audio file, not another video. Choose this route when you need the soundtrack or speech on its own, and check the result to make sure it contains the audio you wanted.

Choose local conversion only when processing location matters

You can convert a WebM file locally with software that processes the video on your device. Before choosing it, verify that the software performs the conversion locally: an installed interface alone does not establish where processing happens. Local conversion can suit you if keeping processing on your device is a requirement, while a browser-based converter offers a direct way to choose a file from your computer or phone and select an output format.

For the simplest route, match the output to the job: MP4 or WebM for a video, JPG for a still frame, and MP3 for audio. Then check the converted file in the place you intend to use it; format choice is a practical starting point, not a guarantee of universal playback.

Choose the format that matches the result you need, then convert your existing file and check the output before sharing or publishing it. Convert your video in Klipa by selecting the file and setting the format you want.
