A video that fits the Status screen, not a video squeezed into it

A WhatsApp Status is a full-screen, vertical space. Post a horizontal video there and you get a thin strip of picture floating between two empty bands; post a square one and it is not much better. Resizing a video for WhatsApp Status means giving it the shape of the screen it will be watched on, and that is what this page does: it opens on the 9:16 vertical format, and you only have to choose how the picture should fill it.

The question nobody answers on WhatsApp itself

People search for the right size of a Status video, the right ratio, a converter, a reducer. Unofficial guides disagree with each other on durations and pixel sizes, and these limits change with app versions, so this page does not quote a figure that we could not source from WhatsApp itself. What is stable is the shape: Status is a tall, phone-sized canvas, and 9:16 is the shape that uses all of it. Anything else leaves empty space or gets cut.

Three ways to fill the vertical frame

The page proposes a fit mode suited to your footage, and the choice stays yours. Fit shows every pixel of the video and softly extends the picture above and below it, using a blur made from the clip itself. Fill scales the video up until it covers the screen, while the AI follows the main subject, a face or a person on the move, and trims only what overflows. Stretch pulls the picture to the frame's exact proportions and deforms it, which is rarely what you want for a family clip but helps when a file was exported squashed.

What this page does not do

It changes the shape of your video, not its length and not its weight. If the app tells you your clip is too long, trim it first with our video cutter. If the file is too heavy to send, the compressor is the right tool, because a resize only lightens a file by ricochet. And a clip filmed in a small resolution will not become sharper by being resized: no tool can invent detail that was never recorded.

Before you post

Your video can be an MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV or WebM, and it leaves as an MP4, which phones open without any fuss. Look at the preview, download the result, and add it to your Status from the gallery.

What the tool produces

How it works

How to resize a video for WhatsApp Status

Step 1

Upload your video

Choose the clip on your phone or computer, or drag it onto the page. A horizontal video is perfectly fine: that is the case this page was built for. Files up to 2 GB are accepted.

Step 2

Keep 9:16 and choose how to fill it

The page starts on vertical 9:16. Keep the suggested fit mode or try Fit, Fill and Stretch in turn, then pick a resolution. A live preview shows what the Status will look like, before you export anything.

Step 3

Download and post

Download the MP4, then open WhatsApp, tap Status and pick it from your gallery. Free downloads carry the Klipa logo; with a Pass or a Pro plan, the file comes without the logo.

Why Klipa

Why resize your Status videos here

Benefit — Resize Video for WhatsApp Status: Full-Screen 9:16 Online

The whole screen, no empty bands

A video that does not match the Status screen shows up with unused space around it. Here every mismatched shape gets either a soft backdrop made from the clip or a crop that fills the screen, so your Status looks deliberate and finished instead of improvised.

Benefit — Resize Video for WhatsApp Status: Full-Screen 9:16 Online

The subject stays in view

With Fill, the subject is tracked so that a face or a moving person is not sliced off by the new frame. That is the difference between a horizontal party video that still shows the birthday child and one that shows an empty corner of the room.

Benefit — Resize Video for WhatsApp Status: Full-Screen 9:16 Online

You decide what is lost

Some clips cannot lose a single edge, others look better cropped. Fit protects the whole picture, Fill gives the strongest full-screen result, and the preview lets you compare both before exporting. Nothing is decided behind your back, and you can switch as often as you like.

Benefit — Resize Video for WhatsApp Status: Full-Screen 9:16 Online

A clean MP4 in a few seconds

Everything runs on the web page, with no app to download on the phone or the computer. You send the clip, adjust, and receive a standard MP4 that WhatsApp reads without conversion. Your original file is left untouched, so you can try another mode and download again.

Real cases

When resizing for Status helps

A horizontal clip filmed with the phone sideways

A concert, a football match or a family dinner filmed in landscape. Fit shows the whole scene on a blurred background, Fill gives a full-screen version centred on what matters, and you choose which one tells the story better.

A video made for another platform

You already have a square or 16:9 video made for a feed or a channel. Instead of re-editing it, reuse it as a Status by changing its shape to the vertical frame and checking the preview.

A product video for your customers

Small shops use Status to show a new arrival or a price list to the contacts who ordered before. Resize the product clip to fill the vertical screen so the item is large and nothing in the frame feels like a leftover.

A screen recording or tutorial

A recording of a phone screen is already tall, a recording of a computer is wide. Resize the wide one to vertical with Fit, and the whole window stays readable on a blurred backdrop instead of being cropped.

A school or community announcement

A short clip announcing an event, a meeting or a result, made on a computer for a projector. Resize it to 9:16 so members of the group read it full-screen on their phones without turning the device.

Frequently asked

WhatsApp Status video resizing: your questions

What do I do so a video fits a WhatsApp Status?

Upload the video and leave the format on 9:16, the shape the page starts with. Pick Fit, Fill or Stretch, and download the MP4. Then open WhatsApp, tap Status and select the file in your gallery. The preview shows the exact frame beforehand.

Which shape of picture is made for a WhatsApp Status?

Status is displayed full-screen on a phone, so the vertical 9:16 shape is the one that fills it. Other shapes still work but leave empty space or get cropped. Durations and pixel sizes change with app versions, so we do not quote any here.

Can my whole clip stay visible in the Status?

Yes, with Fit. The complete picture stays on screen, and the empty bands above and below are replaced by a blur made from the clip itself. No edge is lost and no face is squashed. Fill is the opposite trade: a full screen, in exchange for trimmed edges.

Will this lighten the clip before I send it?

Not directly. A resize changes the shape and, at a lower resolution, may make the file lighter by ricochet, but it does not aim at a given weight. When the file is simply too big, the compressor shrinks it at the same resolution and is the better route.

How do I get a Status clip accepted when it exceeds the app limits?

Two separate problems hide behind that question: the shape, and the length or weight. This page handles the shape. When the clip runs too long for the app, cut it with our video cutter; when it weighs too much, compress it. Taking them in that order protects the quality.

Why does my Status look blurry on screen?

A clip recorded in a low resolution looks soft once displayed full-screen, and resizing cannot add detail that was never captured. Asking for a bigger resolution than your source only spreads the existing pixels. Start from the best original you still have.

Fit or Fill, which one for my Status?

It depends on the footage. Fill is the most striking choice when the subject sits near the middle and can follow the crop. Fit is safer when the whole frame matters, like a moving group or a screen full of text. A mode is recommended automatically, and the final call is yours.

Do I have to convert my phone video first?

Common video files work: MP4 and MOV from phones, AVI, MKV and WebM from other sources, within 2 GB. The output is always an MP4. You do not need to convert anything beforehand, and a clip shot on a phone works as well as one exported from an editor.

Is a Klipa logo stamped on my finished Status clip?

Downloading is free with the Klipa logo on the video. With a Pass for that video or a Pro plan, you get it without the logo. You can run the whole process, preview included, before deciding whether you need the clean file, so seeing the final frame costs nothing.

Video to Shorts, or this page, for a Status?

Video to Shorts decides the vertical crop for you, tracking the subject on its own. Here you choose how the video meets the format, whole picture or cropped, and you may even type a custom size in pixels. Pick this page when you want to control what stays in view.

In closing

Ready to post in full screen

Reshaping a clip for WhatsApp Status takes about a minute: keep 9:16, decide how the picture fills it, glance at the preview, then download. If the clip runs too long for the app, shorten it first with the video cutter. If the file weighs too much to send, the video compressor reduces it without touching the shape. Once the frame is right, your Status is ready for your contacts in a few taps. You can come back at any time to make another version of the same clip, with a different fit mode or resolution, and compare the results side by side before choosing the one you want to share.
