Portrait to landscape, with the whole picture kept

A portrait video is taller than it is wide, while the screens used for longer viewing, such as a YouTube player, a television, a laptop or a meeting-room projector, are the other way round. Play a vertical clip there and you get two wide empty bands. This page turns your portrait video into a landscape 16:9 one: the picture stays whole and upright, and the sides are filled with a blurred version of your own footage. Nothing is cropped and nothing is stretched.

Converting is not rotating

Many pages that rank for this search are actually video rotators. A rotator turns the picture by 90 degrees, so your subject ends up lying on its side. That is the right fix only when you filmed a clip sideways by mistake and it plays tilted. A real portrait-to-landscape conversion keeps the image upright and changes the space around it: the frame becomes wide and your vertical video sits in the middle. If your clip is simply tilted, use our rotate tool. If it is correct but narrow, you are in the right place.

Three ways to fill a wide frame

The page opens on 16:9 in Fit mode, because it is the one that removes nothing. Fit keeps the whole video visible and fills the space on each side with a blurred copy of your footage. Fill makes the video cover the entire frame with no bands, but a 16:9 frame is much shorter than a vertical one, so the top and bottom are cropped; the AI tracks the main subject and keeps it centered, and only the extra edges are lost. Stretch forces the picture to the exact format and distorts its proportions, so it suits special looks rather than a clean conversion. You can switch the mode or the format on screen and check the preview before you export.

What it does not do

Some people ask whether an AI can invent the missing sides of a vertical video. Klipa does not generate new picture content to extend your scene. In Fit mode the sides are a blurred version of the video itself; in Fill mode the edges are cropped away. Both results are predictable, and neither adds anything that was not filmed.

Ready for YouTube, a TV or a presentation

Upload an MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV or WebM file of up to 2 GB and download the result as a standard MP4. The free download carries the Klipa logo; to get it clean, with no logo, take a Pass for that video or a Pro plan.

What the tool produces

How it works

How to convert a portrait video to landscape in 3 steps

Step 1

Upload your vertical video

Drop your portrait clip (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV or WebM, up to 2 GB) or choose it from your phone, tablet or computer. The page opens already set for a wide screen.

Step 2

Check the format and the fit

16:9 and Fit are selected for you: the vertical picture stays whole and the sides are filled with a blurred background. Prefer a full frame? Switch to Fill. The preview shows the result before you export.

Step 3

Download the landscape video

Download your horizontal video as an MP4, ready for YouTube, a TV or a slide deck. The free download carries the Klipa logo; a Pass or a Pro plan removes it.

Why Klipa

Why convert portrait to landscape with Klipa?

Benefit — Portrait to Landscape Video: Convert Without Cropping

No cropping by default

The page starts in Fit mode: your vertical video stays complete, with heads, captions and edges still in the picture. The sides are filled by a blurred background taken from the footage itself, so you never lose part of the scene you filmed.

Benefit — Portrait to Landscape Video: Convert Without Cropping

The picture stays upright

This is a change of frame, not a turn of the image. Your people and text keep the right orientation inside a wide canvas, unlike the rotation tools that lay everything on its side and force viewers to tilt their head.

Benefit — Portrait to Landscape Video: Convert Without Cropping

Your choice of look

Fit keeps everything, Fill covers the whole frame while the AI keeps the subject centered, Stretch fits the exact format. Switch between them on screen and read the preview first, so the result is the one you picked and not a surprise.

Benefit — Portrait to Landscape Video: Convert Without Cropping

Online, nothing to install

Upload, adjust and download from your browser, on a phone or a computer. There is no editing software to learn and no timeline to open, which makes it quick for a single clip or a handful of them. The page is built for one job, so there are few settings to read before you start.

Real cases

When to convert a portrait video to landscape

Publish a phone clip on YouTube

A video shot vertically on your phone looks small on a YouTube player, surrounded by black on both sides. A 16:9 version with a blurred background fills the player and still shows the whole picture.

Show a vertical video on a TV

Family videos, event recordings and clips saved from a phone are often vertical. Convert them to landscape before you cast or copy them to a television, so they use the full width of the screen.

Put a clip in a presentation

Slides, meeting decks and projectors are horizontal. A landscape version of your vertical clip fits a slide without leaving odd empty areas, and the speaker or the product stays fully visible.

Reuse a vertical post on a wide format

A video made for a vertical feed can find a second life on a website, a newsletter or a horizontal channel. Convert it once to 16:9 instead of rebuilding the montage in an editor.

Keep subtitles and text readable

When captions or on-screen text are close to the edges of a vertical video, cropping would cut them. Fit mode keeps every word in the frame, so the message survives the change of shape.

Frequently asked

Portrait to landscape video: frequently asked questions

What are the steps to make my portrait clip landscape?

Upload your vertical clip, keep the 16:9 format that is already selected, and export. The page is set to Fit mode, so the whole picture stays upright in the middle and a blurred version of your footage fills the sides. The conversion takes place online, with nothing to install.

Is it possible to keep the entire picture when going to landscape?

Yes. In Fit mode the entire video remains visible, nothing is cut and nothing is distorted: the space on each side is filled with a blurred background drawn from your footage. If you choose Fill instead, the video covers the full frame, and the extra edges at the top and bottom are cropped.

Can artificial intelligence invent the missing sides of my vertical clip?

No. Klipa does not generate new scenery to extend your picture. In Fit mode the sides are a blurred version of the video itself, and in Fill mode an AI tracks the main subject and keeps it centered while only the excess edges are cropped. Everything you see was already in your footage.

Is converting portrait to landscape the same as rotating a video?

No. Rotating turns the whole picture by a quarter turn, so people and text end up on their side. It is the right tool only for a clip that was filmed tilted. Converting keeps the image upright and widens the frame around it. If you need to turn a video, use our rotate tool.

Does this work for a clip filmed on my iPhone?

Yes. Open this page in your phone browser, choose the video from your device, check the preview and download the result. Everything runs online, so there is no app to install and no editing skills required. A computer works exactly the same way.

Which format should I choose for YouTube or a TV?

Choose 16:9, the wide shape of YouTube players and televisions. It is the format this page selects when it opens. You can change to another format on screen, such as 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5, or enter a custom size, but 16:9 is the standard for horizontal viewing.

What if I want my clip to cover the entire screen?

Switch from Fit to Fill. The video then covers the entire frame with no side bands. Since a wide frame is much shorter than a vertical one, the top and bottom are cropped; the AI follows the main subject to keep it centered, and only the extra edges are removed.

Will my finished landscape file show a logo?

Yes: the converted video carries the Klipa logo. To download it clean, with no logo, get a Pass for that video or a Pro plan. Whichever fit mode you choose, Fit, Fill or Stretch, the rule is the same for the free download.

What kind of file do I need, and what size limit applies?

MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV and WebM files are accepted, up to 2 GB. Whatever you upload, the landscape video is exported as an MP4, the format that YouTube, TVs, phones and presentation software all read without any extra conversion step on your side.

And the opposite, wide to tall: is that possible here?

Yes, but it is a different job. Going from wide to tall means choosing what to keep in the frame, which our Video to Shorts tool does by following the subject. This page is built for the opposite direction: from vertical to horizontal, with the picture kept whole.

In closing

A wide frame without losing the picture

Going from portrait to landscape does not have to mean cutting your video. Keep Fit mode for a complete picture on a blurred background, or switch to Fill when you want the frame covered. If your clip is only tilted and needs a quarter turn, use our video rotator. If you want to go the other way and make a vertical video from a horizontal one, try Video to Shorts, which follows the subject for you. Both pages work the same way: upload, check the preview, download.
